Season: Autumn
The cold of winter is beginning to creep in upon the lands but has not yet arrived. Trees are barren and pines are darkening as if bracing for the coming chill. The first frost has yet to strike but the coats of equines are growing thicker and rougher. Mornings and nights bring stark chills to the land and its best to sleep out of the wind. Crisp breezes run through the day and into the night. Boughts of chilling rain strike the area every few days.

Let's Race! (Open) « Thread Started on Apr 20, 2008, 2:52pm »
A flash of bright bay flickered across the Azumi Plains, black tassles whipping behind the flickering form. Sunlight danced across Rave's pelt as strong lean muscles rippled smoothly under her coat. Streaming behind her, Rave's ebony banner caught the brisk autumn breeze combing through the plains. Powerful pillars carried Rave's slender Arabian body, daggers digging into the cool earth and kicking up a fine trail of dust behind her as she galloped with ease.
Above her, bright azure sky hung untainted by clouds and a bright sun gracing the beautiful day. All around, Rave could see the tall grasses turning yellow and gold as the season came and went, whipping at her stockinged legs as they flashed through the sparse plains undergrowth. The horizon stretched on forever in every direction, only touched by the distant trees that marked the end of the plains. Other then that, Rave could swear the horizon went on forever. For her, that was a promising thing. It meant there were still places to run, things to explore and equines to meet.
Another sound broke the quiet of the plains however. Black-tipped auds flicked and firey brown eyes glanced around. Another equine seemed to be asking for a race, galloping up from behind or to the side somewhere. Rave cantered over a hill and looked around again in hopes of finding the one seeking a good race. If they wanted to race, she would race though Rave wouldn't be gentle just because the equine was smaller or heavier or anything. She would race like the wind no matter who it was foolishly asking to race her.
The day was beautiful, bright, and warm. Cloud's snowy hide shimmered and shone under the great star above. He'd been up and about all morning, his light banner swishing broadly behind him. With nothing to do and nowhere to run, the mustang had retreated to the Azumi Plains, hoping to stretch his legs. He'd been anxious all day long.
The warmth of the day beat down on him, but being as it was autumn, it wasn't unbearable. It was rather nice. He took off in a flash, his name really suiting him perfectly. His hooves seemed to carry him across the land and the thunder of his hooves could have easily drowned out that of any other, even rivaled the very thunder itself. It soon began to lull him into a trance-like state, his mind only on the plains ahead and where he may end up.
The flash of white and the steady beat of his hooves would have easily alerted any to his presence. Cloud was small, but he sure made some thunder when he ran. He sometimes found irony in the fact his name was Cloud and his father was Thunder Cloud. His father was never very loud anyway.
The scent of another got caught up in his nostrils, zapping Cloud from his lala-land state of mind. His eyes looked about, searching for whomever was here. It didn't take long to spot them, running themselves crazy like himself, enjoying the day as well.
Another runner, he thought interestedly. "Let's see them in real action," he murmured. Typically, this would be considered out of character for Cloud. He didn't really hang around company much. But today was such a nice day, and with winter coming soon he wanted to get in all the running he could. He wanted to challenge himself, challenge this other horse. He put on the speed and whinnied, calling his declaration to them. They would race if the other accepted. It seemed it would be quite the challenge for the both of them. Just what Cloud needed right now.
The whiny accompanying the hoof-falls of another made Rave smirk. So she'd been right. The newcomer was looking for a little race. Well that would be fun. Tossing her head to get her black forelock out of her eyes, Rave caught sight of the other, a mustang from his build. He was snowy white and when looking at him in the sunlight, Rave couldn't gaze too long lest she go blind. Shaking her head, Rave tossed her crown again and let out her own answering whiny. She would accept his challenge. There was a small creek coming up that would serve as their finish line.
Turning her dark brown gaze to the direction of the creek, Rave focused on it and her hoves flew. Black and white leg markings flashed as the tall grasses of the Azumi Plains whipped at her long limbs. Powerful muscles worked smoothly under her beautiful bay pelt. Rave's inky mess of mane and tail flew out behind her, catching the cool autumn winds that rushed over the plains, racing each other just as the horses did.
Rave was a good sport of course and didn't want to leave the stag in the dust but something told her he'd be able to keep up just fine. Unlike some he probably wasn't a slowpoke so she wasn't going to waste time giving him a lead if he had the strength to fight for it. Being a mare, naturally Rave was lighter. Lighter didn't mean better. Lighter meant less muscle mass in her legs and shoulders. What she did have was the advantage of hieght, longer legs and familiarity with the surroundings.

The small mustang swooped in on the female, behind her by only a few neck lengths. He could catch up, right? No problem.
Cloud's blue eye gazed upon her bay form, watching her muscles flex and deflex in almost perfect rhythm with his own. She was fast, very fast, and knew better than to just give him a win. That's exactly what he was looking for, though. Cloud wanted a fair race with the mare, and it seemed he was going to get one.
He shook his head as he looked up at her - for he was smaller by about two hh - and his light tassels flitted around. He gave her another whinny, this time more of a greeting than anything. However nomadic the brujo was, he could be quite hospitable. It had been a while since he'd last seen another face around, and he was almost glad of it. He wasn't hateful, just preferred to be alone most of the time.
Galloping as fast as his little legs would go, he jumped over a molehill in the ground, landing almost exactly with Rave. The wind in his hair made him feel free, made him feel more like a cloud in the sky than ever. He loved floating through the air currents, running as fast as his hooves could take.
He showed now signs of letting up, nor did the mare next to him. He opened his nasal cavities to take in more of the air rushing past his heavy bodice and let out a huge sneeze, knocking him a little off course.

Rave was a little surprised to find that her challenger was an ivory stag. The ivory and the stag part really weren't all that surprising. What was surprising however, was that he was a little on the small side. Rave knew she was a little long-legged, standing 16 hands high. That made the stag about 14, maybe 15 hands high. That was the shocker. From what Rave could catch out of the corner of her eye, the stallion was a rough mountain pony or some kind of mountain horse. What he was doing out in the plains was a mystery to Rave but as long as he liked to run she didn't particularly care.
Extending her fluid stride, Rave galloped on, lost in the thunder of falling hooves. The wind whispered in her ears as they galloped toward the creek. Steadily the stream of liquid running through the Azumi Plains was getting closer. Muscles under Rave's bright bay coat bunched. The mare tossed her head a little and kicked off. She sailed over the creek, landing on the other bank and shooting forward a few feet before circling back to the water. Her hooves kicked up high as she pranced a little to slow her momentum and come to a smooth halt at the water, looking around to see what had become of her racing companion.

Cloud ran harder, realizing the mare's legs were quite longer than his own. While he was blur, she had a longer stride than he could ever wish to achieve. He snorted in good-hearted sore-losing as she jumped the stream ahead of them, barely a nose length in front of him and about two hands or so taller than him.
He veered to the right, slowing his pace gradually. The small white stallion trotted into the stream and lowered his maw, taking in large gulps of the water. He wasn't overheated, just thirsty. He guzzled down his fill and raised his dicolored eyes to his temporary companion. Her light bay coat shimmered over her muscles and bones; she was in good shape.
No wonder I lost, he thought. Her legs are longer and she's just as muscular as I. Less fat too, of course. He raised his head a bit higher, showing his proud blue and brown eyes. His crown was held with dignity as well as he peered at her. Although he was sore at losing, Cloud said, "Hello there. Some day for a race, eh?" And it was. The sky hadn't changed a bit since the race began, and Cloud enjoyed the weather. Although it should have been cold by now, it was rather nice for the fall.

Rave's fiery brown eyes caught Cloud's staring. She tossed her head and snorted softly, black whip whisking around her hind legs and brushing her hindquarters. He didn't seem to be a sore looser though and that was good. While he was smaller, his hooves were probably harder and stronger then her own from growing possibly in mountainous regions whereas Rave had always been a plain-dweller and proud of it. Tossing her head again, Rave loped back to the stream with long fluid strides. Under her blood-toned coat the hard muscles rippled over her bones as her shoulders flexed.
Dipping her crown, she drank deep as the ivory stag spoke. Her black-tipped ears swerved forward and she raised her head. "Nice day indeed" Rave agreed, looking around at the vast Azumi Plains. Too bad it wasn't a challenge Rave thought idly. "Let me guess" Rave nickered, looking back at the stag. "You're a lead stallion somewhere looking for mares to rope into your herd?" Herds had never impressed Rave. She just wasn't that social. If that was why the stallion had raced her she would either kick him in the jaw or walk off.

Cloud snorted illhumeredly at the horse's words. I? Lead a herd? he mused. His brown and blue eyes reflected his distaste for the idea and he pawed the ground, beginning to find a bit of humor in the idea. So, this mare obviously refuses to be rounded up. At least she has some sense.
"Of course not, is your head spinning from your run? Do I even look like a lead stallion? Those too-proud, push-over mares with gull," he spat, adding a bit of a jokingly good-humored smile. Cloud meant no insult to the mare; just stating his opinion, and he wanted to be sure she wouldn't take unkindly to his words.
Again, the thought of being a lead stallion creapt into his mind and made the white brujo wonder how odd it would be for him to be the leader of a herd. Not the life for him at all. Cloud was one of those horses who couldn't stay confined to one place, who needed to continue to move at all costs. Freedom is what Cloud lived for and he would never give that up, no matter how many mares he would have to his name, or how many he traveled with. Big crouds got on Cloud's nerves, anyway. "All very unfavorable conditions for one who loves to roam so." he added as though explaining it to her.
